If only environmental advocates in Negros Oriental would focus on real, science-backed solutions—like Dumaguete City's innovative plastic-to-school-chair recycling program—rather than peddling doomsday scenarios with no data to back them up, we’d have far more to celebrate than argue about. Dumaguete’s Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) is not just DENR-compliant; it's a multi-awarded model, frequently benchmarked by LGUs across the country. Yes, other cities come here to learn from us. And yet, ironically, it’s often our own so-called environmentalists who paint the bleakest, most misleading picture of our city. The truth is: while they spread baseless claims of environmental catastrophes like mass fish kills allegedly caused by coastal developments such as the Pantawan, Dumaguete continues to lead with sustainable, replicable best practices that actually make environmental sense. Progress rooted in innovation should be embraced—not vilified—especially when it’s done in the service of future generations. Photo Description: Here is the recent delivery of school chairs made from recycled plastic materials by the Dumaguete City LGU, personally led by Mayor Felipe “Ipe” Remollo at Camanjac High School, together with Engr. Letty Duran, teachers, students, and PTA officers. These eco-friendly chairs complement the newly constructed 3-storey, 9-classroom building funded entirely by the City Government.Read moreRead less
