7 NPAs Killed, 9 High-Powered Firearms Seized in Intense Clash in Masbate

MASBATE, Philippines – In another decisive blow to the dwindling forces of the Communist Party of the Philippines–New People’s Army–National Democratic Front (CPP-NPA-NDF), seven NPA rebels were killed, and nine high-powered firearms were recovered during a 30-minute gun battle in Barangay San Mateo, Uson, Masbate early Sunday morning, July 27.

The encounter broke out at around 6:00 AM, when troops from the 2nd Infantry Battalion clashed with members of the Communist Terrorist Group (CTG) under KLG South, SRC4, Bicol Regional Party Committee (BRPC).

Following the firefight, government forces recovered the following:

  • 4 M16 rifles
  • 2 M203 grenade launchers
  • 1 M14 rifle
  • 1 M653 rifle
  • 1 Bushmaster rifle
  • Subversive documents and personal items

This success marks another milestone under the intensified focused military operations (FMO) of Joint Task Force Bicolandia, in line with the directive of Major General Aldwine I. Almase, the newly installed commander of the 9th Infantry “Spear” Division (9ID).

While the tactical win weakens the CTG’s operational capacity in Masbate and surrounding areas, the Philippine Army maintains that armed confrontation is not the ultimate goal. The 9ID continues to encourage remaining NPA members to surrender peacefully, avail of the government’s reintegration programs, and begin a life of dignity and peace.

“We call on those still in the armed movement to lay down their arms and work with us in building a peaceful and progressive community,” said a 9ID spokesperson.

The government reiterates its commitment to pursuing sustained peace efforts in conflict-affected areas and ensuring that former rebels are given opportunities for a better future under national reintegration efforts.
