The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reported the earthquake’s magnitude as 7.3, occurring approximately 100 kilometers (62 miles) northeast of Tonga’s main island in the early morning hours of Monday local time.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued an alert, indicating that hazardous waves could affect coastlines within the specified radius. As of now, there have been no immediate reports of damage or casualties. Tonga, a Polynesian country comprising 171 islands and a population of just over 100,000, lies more than 3,500 kilometers (2,000 miles) east of Australia.
It’s noteworthy that different agencies have reported varying magnitudes for the earthquake. The German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) recorded a magnitude of 6.6 at a depth of 10 kilometers.
Meanwhile, the U.S. Geological Survey reported a magnitude of 7.3, with the epicenter located 132 kilometers southeast of Pangai, Tonga, at a depth of 55 kilometers.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and will provide updates as more information becomes available. Residents in affected areas are advised to remain alert and follow guidance from local officials.
