The heaviest fighting occurred near Lyman-Borova in eastern Ukraine, along with significant combat on the Pokrovsk and Huliaipole fronts, where Ukrainian forces said Russian troops and equipment sustained heavy losses during mechanized assault operations.
The renewed Russian military push represents part of a broader spring campaign targeting what analysts describe as the “Fortress Belt” of heavily defended cities in Ukraine’s Donetsk region, according to Ukrainian military assessments.

Major Assault Repelled at Lyman-Borova
One of the most significant confrontations took place on March 19 along the Lyman-Borova axis, where Ukraine’s Third Army Corps faced simultaneous attacks from Russia’s 1st Tank Army and 20th Combined Arms Army.
According to the Third Army Corps, Russian forces launched coordinated assaults on seven different directions using more than 500 infantry troops, 28 armored vehicles, and over 100 motorized vehicles, including buggies and quad bikes.
Ukrainian defenders successfully halted the assault within four hours, according to corps officials. Interfax-Ukraine, citing the Third Army Corps, reported Russian equipment losses including 84 motorized vehicles, 11 infantry fighting vehicles and armored personnel carriers, and three tanks.
The Ukrainian military also reported damage to a Russian TOS-1A Solntsepyok heavy flamethrower system and five artillery pieces during the engagement.
Six-Week Russian Buildup Detected
Brigadier General Andriy Biletsky, commander of the Third Army Corps, said Ukrainian units had monitored signs of Russian military preparations for approximately six weeks before the March 19 attack.
According to Biletsky, Russian forces had intensified strikes on crossings over the Oskil River, attempted to disrupt Ukrainian logistics networks, constructed pontoon crossings, and cleared routes in preparation for mechanized offensive operations.
The extended preparation period allowed Ukrainian defenders sufficient time to establish countermeasures and coordinate their defensive response, military officials said.
Fighting Intensifies on Pokrovsk Front
Ukrainian forces also reported successful defensive operations on the Pokrovsk front, where Russian assault units faced significant losses during a 48-hour engagement period.
Ukrainska Pravda reported on March 19 that Ukraine’s Spartan Brigade, working alongside adjacent military units, stopped a Russian assault operation that lasted over two days.
According to Ukrainian military reports, more than 120 Russian assault troops were killed and six wounded during the Pokrovsk engagement, while Ukrainian forces destroyed seven quad bikes, four motorcycles, and three vehicles.
Reuters separately identified Pokrovsk as one of the primary focal points of Russia’s broader spring military campaign, indicating the strategic importance of the area for both sides.
Drone Operations Target Russian Column
Further south on the Huliaipole axis in Zaporizhzhia region, Ukraine’s 414th Separate Unmanned Systems Brigade, known as Magyar’s Birds, conducted successful drone operations against Russian mechanized forces.
Ukrinform reported that Ukrainian drone operators detected and destroyed a Russian mechanized column moving along the Malynivka–Zelenyi Hai–Huliaipole route on March 25.

The targeted Russian column included a tank, an armored fighting vehicle, and two quad bikes carrying troops, according to Ukrainian military sources.
Drones from Ukraine’s 225th Separate Assault Regiment and other units subsequently joined the strike operation, destroying the equipment before surviving Russian troops attempted to find cover.
Terrain Challenges for Russian Forces
Reuters reported that the open terrain around Huliaipole has made large-scale armored assaults particularly difficult for Russian forces due to limited natural obstacles and minimal concealment from drone surveillance systems.
The geographical challenges have consistently favored Ukrainian defensive operations, allowing drone operators to identify and target Russian mechanized units with greater effectiveness.
Military analysts noted that armored advances remain highly vulnerable to drone operations, a factor that has significantly impacted Russian offensive capabilities throughout the conflict.

The recent battlefield engagements represent part of a larger pattern of intensifying combat operations across multiple front sectors, according to Ukrainian military assessments.
Reuters reported that Ukraine’s General Staff documented Russian forces conducting more than 600 assault operations over four days during the previous week across several parts of the front line.
The assault operations included 163 attacks near Pokrovsk and 84 near Kostiantynivka, demonstrating the scope of Russian military activity during the spring offensive period.
Ukrainian officials and international analysts quoted by Reuters described the attacks as part of an attempt to pressure multiple sectors simultaneously, seeking to create conditions for larger breakthrough operations.
