Military officials, veterans, and community leaders converged at the MacArthur Shrine in Candahug, Palo, Leyte on April 9, 2026, for the 84th Day of Valor commemoration organized by the Philippine Army’s 8th Infantry (Stormtroopers) Division. The ceremony at the Marker of the Unknown Soldier served as a tribute to Filipino courage and the sacrifices made by reservists and veterans throughout history.
The observance carried the meaningful theme “Giting ng Bayani, Pamana sa Salinlahi,” highlighting how the bravery of Filipino heroes continues to serve as an enduring legacy for future generations. This annual commemoration marks the historic fall of Bataan and Corregidor during World War II, events that exemplify Filipino resilience in the face of overwhelming adversity.
Leadership Calls for Daily Acts of Service
Brigadier General Pompeyo Jason M. Almagro, PA, who commands the 802nd Infantry (Peerless) Brigade, presided over the tribute ceremony and delivered remarks emphasizing that heroic service extends far beyond annual commemorative events.

“As soldiers, we constantly display heroism not only during Araw ng Kagitingan. The mere fact that we serve the country, despite the sacrifices we make, even risking our lives, reflects our willingness to uphold the freedom and peace of our nation,” Brigadier General Almagro told the assembled crowd.
His message underscored the continuous nature of military service and the daily commitment required to protect Philippine sovereignty and democratic institutions. The 8th Infantry Division, headquartered at Camp Lukban in Catbalogan City, Samar, maintains operational responsibility for peace and security throughout Eastern Visayas.
Veteran’s Message Bridges Generations
Among the ceremony’s most poignant moments was an address delivered by 80-year-old Pantaleon Estolero from Tolosa, Leyte, whose background as a former Constabulary member provided a living connection to the military heritage being celebrated.
Estolero challenged current military personnel to demonstrate strength, competence, and discipline while maintaining their commitment to serving Filipino citizens with pride and confidence. His presence symbolized the unbroken chain of service connecting today’s armed forces with their historical predecessors.
The veteran’s participation highlighted the crucial mentoring role that experienced service members play in transmitting military values and traditions to newer generations, ensuring institutional memory and professional standards remain intact.
Provincial Official Promotes Patriotic Values
Board Member Villasin addressed the gathering with remarks that positioned the Day of Valor observance as an opportunity for patriotic renewal and strengthened national identity, rather than merely historical remembrance.
Her speech specifically recognized the bravery displayed by Filipino ancestors who fought for national independence and sovereignty, emphasizing that contemporary observances should function as catalysts for renewed dedication to democratic principles and national values.
The provincial leadership’s involvement demonstrated the collaborative approach between civilian and military authorities in preserving heroic memory while addressing modern challenges facing the Philippines.
Traditional Honors and Cultural Elements
The commemoration incorporated multiple ceremonial components designed to appropriately honor fallen heroes and veterans. These included a formal wreath-laying ceremony, a traditional 21-gun salute, and a water salute, each carrying significant meaning within military protocol and tradition.
Cultural presentations enriched the observance, featuring dance performances that showcased Filipino heritage and values. The Sons and Daughters of the Veterans organization contributed through a floral offering ceremony, symbolizing the ongoing connection between historical sacrifices and contemporary appreciation.
Board Member Villasin conducted the wreath-laying rites, followed by representatives from various law enforcement agencies and community stakeholders, demonstrating unified government commitment to honoring military sacrifice across different sectors.
Diverse Community and Official Attendance
The ceremony attracted substantial participation from government officials and community organizations, reflecting widespread support for commemorating Filipino military heritage and service. Local government representation included Palo Mayor Remedios Petilla, demonstrating municipal commitment to honoring national heroes.
Veteran participation featured Michael Margallo, Regional Assistant of the Veterans Federation of the Philippines – Region 8, and Mario Blasabas, Officer-in-Charge of the Philippine Veterans Affairs Office Field Service Office 8, representing federal veteran services and advocacy.
Law enforcement agencies contributed representatives from the Leyte Provincial Police Office, Bureau of Fire Protection, and Philippine Coast Guard, showcasing the inter-agency coordination that characterizes contemporary Philippine security operations.
Youth involvement came through Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts of the Philippines members, ensuring younger generations witness and participate in honoring military sacrifice and national service values.
Call for Meaningful Commemoration Through Action
The 8th Infantry Division concluded the ceremony with a broader appeal to all Filipinos to honor heroic valor and sacrifices through substantive action rather than remembrance alone. Military leadership stressed that authentic commemoration requires meaningful commitment to peace, unity, and continued national progress.
This message reflects military understanding that honoring past sacrifices must translate into contemporary dedication to the values and freedoms that previous generations fought to secure and defend.
The Day of Valor commemoration at the historic Government Center in Candahug served dual purposes as both solemn remembrance of historical heroism and renewed commitment to the ongoing mission of serving Filipino citizens and protecting democratic institutions throughout the archipelago.
