Traditional Leaders Maintain Strong Positions

The University of the Philippines reinforced its status as the country’s strongest performer in regional and global league tables. According to QS, UP also ranks at 362 in the QS World University Rankings 2026, making it the highest-ranked Philippine university in the global table.

Ateneo de Manila University remained second among Philippine schools in the Asia ranking, while De La Salle University stayed close behind in third place. This result maintains the long-standing dominance of UP, Ateneo, and La Salle at the forefront of the national higher education field. QS lists Ateneo at 511 and De La Salle at 654 in the 2026 global rankings.

University of Santo Tomas placed fourth among Philippine institutions in Asia 2026, sustaining its standing as one of the country’s most visible and historically established universities. UST is also listed by QS at 851-900 in the global QS World University Rankings 2026.

Adamson University Makes Notable Climb

One of the more significant developments in the latest table is Adamson University’s rise to fifth among Philippine institutions with an Asian ranking of 464. This placement positioned the university ahead of several larger and more internationally visible institutions, demonstrating how the QS Asia methodology can reward strong institutional performance across reputation, research, learning environment, and international indicators.

The University of San Carlos ranked sixth in the Philippines and 507th in Asia. According to USC, the institution also placed 94th in Southeast Asia, maintaining its position as one of the country’s strongest universities outside Luzon and the highest-ranked institution from the Visayas in the QS Asia 2026 table.

Technology and Regional Universities Show Strength

Mapúa University secured seventh place nationally at 544th in Asia, continuing its strong profile in engineering, technology, and innovation-focused education. QS also lists Mapúa at 103rd in Southeast Asia and 1401+ in the 2026 global rankings.

The Polytechnic University of the Philippines ranked eighth among Philippine universities and 671st in Asia. In its own statement, PUP said it also placed 116th in Southeast Asia and second among state universities and colleges in the country, highlighting its growing regional visibility despite limited resources compared with some private competitors.

Silliman University, based in Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental, placed ninth nationally at 694th in Asia. According to Silliman University, its continuing presence in the QS Asia list affirms its role as one of the Philippines’ leading private universities and one of the Visayas’ most academically prominent institutions.

MSU-IIT Completes Top Ten Rankings

Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology completed the Philippine top 10, entering the list at 731-740 in Asia. MSU-IIT stated that the result showed a major improvement from the previous year and reflected its growing reputation in science, technology, and research-driven education in Mindanao.

The latest ranking demonstrates a broad geographic spread in Philippine higher education excellence. While Metro Manila institutions continue to dominate the top tier, universities from Cebu, Dumaguete, and Iligan also made the national top 10, suggesting that regional institutions are becoming more competitive in Asia-facing benchmarks.

QS Ranking Methodology and Assessment Criteria

According to QS, the Asia rankings utilize indicators that include academic reputation, employer reputation, faculty-student ratio, papers per faculty, citations per paper, international research network, international faculty, international students, inbound and outbound exchange, and staff with a PhD.

This methodology means the results are not based solely on research volume, but on a comprehensive mix of academic quality, reputation, global engagement, and institutional strength. The multi-faceted approach allows universities to demonstrate excellence across various dimensions of higher education performance.

Philippine Higher Education Landscape Evolution

For the Philippines, the 2026 list presents both a familiar and evolving picture of higher education excellence. The traditional national leaders remain firmly established in their positions, but the emergence of strong performers from regional areas points to a more competitive and geographically diverse higher education landscape.

With 35 Philippine institutions now included in the published QS Asia table, the country’s university sector is gaining increased visibility and attention across the region. This expanded representation suggests growing recognition of Philippine higher education quality and international engagement.

The rankings reflect ongoing efforts by Philippine universities to enhance their research output, international partnerships, and academic reputation. The inclusion of institutions from different regions of the archipelago demonstrates that excellence in higher education is not concentrated solely in the capital region.

The QS World University Rankings: Asia 2026 results indicate that Philippine universities are increasingly competitive in regional comparisons, with institutions showing strength across various metrics including research performance, international collaboration, and employer recognition of graduates.
