Dumaguete City residents and visitors now have access to a significantly upgraded mobile network after Globe Telecom announced the deployment of more than 30 5G sites across the city, part of the telecom giant’s sustained drive to improve connectivity in key provincial areas throughout the Philippines.
Dumaguete Now Has Over 40 Active Cellsites
According to Globe, the latest expansion brings Dumaguete’s total mobile infrastructure to more than 40 cellsites, combining the newly activated 5G nodes with existing installations. The telecommunications company said the upgrades are designed to enhance network performance, increase capacity, and deliver a noticeably improved experience for mobile users throughout the city.
Beyond mobile infrastructure, Globe also highlighted the growth of its fixed-line fiber network, noting that its Globe Fiber service now spans more than 330,000 kilometers nationwide. The company said the expanded fiber footprint is intended to meet the growing demand for high-speed internet connections among Filipino households and businesses.
A City of Around 145,000 Stands to Benefit
Globe said the network improvements are expected to directly benefit Dumaguete’s approximately 145,000 residents, in addition to the large number of tourists and students who pass through the city each year. The upgraded 5G infrastructure is anticipated to support faster download speeds, smoother video streaming, more stable online gaming connections, and more reliable access to e-learning platforms and digital government services.
The company also noted that real-time travel information and digital tourism tools would function better under the improved network, catering to the steady flow of visitors that Dumaguete attracts as one of Central Visayas’ premier tourism and education destinations.
Globe Executive Cites Broader Economic Participation
Jun Juada, Globe’s Business Head for Western Visayas, said the expansion underscores the company’s commitment to making digital infrastructure available beyond Metro Manila and other major urban centers. “Connectivity continues to play an important role in helping communities access opportunities, services, and information,” Juada said in a statement issued by Globe. “Through our ongoing investments in 5G and network enhancements, we are providing customers in Dumaguete City with a better mobile experience that supports their everyday needs and enables them to participate more fully in the digital economy.”
Juada’s remarks reflect a broader corporate narrative at Globe, which has been publicly pushing its provincial expansion agenda as part of a strategic effort to close the digital divide between urban and rural communities across the archipelago.
Students, Educators, and Businesses Among Priority Users
Dumaguete, widely referred to as the City of Gentle People, holds a distinctive role in the Visayas region as a hub for higher education and cultural tourism. The city is home to several universities and colleges, drawing thousands of students from across the country. Globe said its improved 5G coverage is specifically aimed at serving students and educators who rely on digital tools for learning, as well as entrepreneurs and business operators who depend on stable internet for daily transactions.
Travelers visiting the city’s heritage sites, coastal attractions, and surrounding island destinations are also among the target users of the enhanced network, Globe added.
GlobeOne App and 5G Devices Recommended
To take full advantage of the upgraded network, Globe encouraged its subscribers to ensure they are using 5G-capable devices. Without compatible hardware, users will continue to access the network at lower generations such as 4G LTE, limiting the speed and performance benefits the new infrastructure can provide.
The company also pointed users toward the GlobeOne app as a central tool for managing their accounts. According to Globe, the application allows subscribers to monitor data consumption, register for promotional offerings, settle bills, and request technical support — including assistance with broadband service issues or repairs.
Part of a Nationwide Push Into Provincial Markets
Globe described the Dumaguete rollout as consistent with its continuing nationwide effort to bring advanced connectivity to communities outside the country’s largest cities. The company has framed its provincial investments as contributions to improved quality of life and economic development, arguing that reliable digital access unlocks opportunities in education, commerce, health services, and public administration.
According to Globe, the Dumaguete expansion is part of a long-term infrastructure investment plan that prioritizes underserved and emerging markets in the provinces, with more rollouts expected in other parts of the Visayas and Mindanao in the coming months.
The move comes as telecom competition in the Philippines intensifies, with Globe and its rivals continuing to race toward broader 5G coverage as consumer and business demand for high-speed mobile data continues to grow across all regions of the country.
