On the morning of Saturday, May 16, 2026, 207 young men and women took their oaths as commissioned officers of the Armed Forces of the Philippines — marking the culmination of four demanding years at the Philippine Military Academy. The commencement exercises for PMA “TALANG DANGAL” Class of 2026 were held at the Fajardo Grandstand, Fort General Gregorio H. Del Pilar, Baguio City, in one of the most ceremonially significant events in the country’s annual military calendar.
A New Generation Enters Active Military Service
The graduating batch was composed of 142 male and 65 female cadets, all of whom completed the Academy’s four-year program and were awarded the degree of Bachelor of Science in Management Major in Security Studies, according to the Philippine Military Academy’s public affairs office.
Upon formal commissioning, the 207 new officers were distributed across the three main branches of the AFP: 76 were assigned to the Philippine Army, 62 to the Philippine Air Force, and 69 to the Philippine Navy. Their entry into active service signals the AFP’s continuous effort to replenish and strengthen its officer corps.
The class name “TALANG DANGAL” stands as an acronym for “Tagapagtanggol ng Lahing Dakila at Marangal,” reflecting the graduating cohort’s declared identity as defenders of a great and honorable people.
Technology-Focused Training Added to Standard Curriculum
While the Class of 2026 underwent training under the PMA’s previous academic curriculum, the Academy introduced supplementary microcredential courses intended to prepare graduates for modern and emerging security challenges, according to the Academy’s public affairs office.
These additional courses covered AI Fundamentals, Python Programming, Data Analytics, Electronic Warfare, and Unmanned Systems. The PMA said the added competencies were designed to equip new officers with practical technical skills relevant to both conventional and technology-driven operational environments.
The integration of these technology-focused modules is seen as part of a broader institutional shift in how the Academy is preparing its graduates to navigate an increasingly digitized and complex security landscape — where cyber threats, unmanned systems, and data-driven decision-making are becoming central features of modern military operations.
President Marcos Calls on Officers to Uphold the Constitution
President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. served as Guest of Honor and Speaker at the ceremony in his capacity as Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Philippines. In his commencement address, President Marcos issued a direct and firm challenge to the newly commissioned officers regarding their duty to the rule of law and institutional integrity.
“Your loyalty must always remain with the Constitution of the Republic of the Philippines. Throughout this mission, carry with you the Honor Code instilled in you by the Academy. Never lie, never cheat, never steal, and never tolerate those who do. Because silence in the face of wrongdoing is a betrayal of your values, a betrayal of your country, and a betrayal of the very principles that you have sworn to defend,” the President said during the ceremony.
Marcos underscored personal integrity and accountability as non-negotiable qualities for AFP officers assuming leadership roles within the military establishment.
Valedictorian Librada Speaks of Readiness and Responsibility
Cadet First Class Christine Kaye D. Librada, CCAFP, delivered the valedictory address on behalf of the graduating class. Librada, who finished as class valedictorian, framed her remarks around the weight of the responsibilities the new officers were about to assume as they transitioned from academy life to field service.
“As officers of the Armed Forces, we now accept a greater responsibility. We will lead in uncertainty, decide under pressure, and serve something greater than ourselves. The path ahead will not be easy but we are prepared,” Librada said in her address.
Her message drew on themes of sacrifice, service, and the readiness to lead — values that the Philippine Military Academy has long regarded as foundational to the character of a Filipino military officer.
PMA Superintendent Thanks Families for Their Trust
Vice Admiral Caesar Bernard N. Valencia PN, Superintendent of the Philippine Military Academy, delivered the welcome remarks at the ceremony. He used the occasion to express the Academy’s gratitude toward the families who entrusted their children to the institution for the full four years of training and formation.
“Thank you again for entrusting your sons and daughters to the Academy. In the four years that they were in our care, we molded, nurtured and raised them as our own. Ngayon po, binabalik na namin sila sa inyo, but not as lanky boys and girls but rather as young men and women. Stronger in body, sharper in mind, deeper in character and soldiers of our nation,” Vice Admiral Valencia said.
His remarks acknowledged the essential role that families play as partners in the development of PMA cadets throughout their years at the Academy.
Defense Secretary Declares Commissioning; AFP Chief Administers Oath
The official commissioning declaration was made by Secretary of National Defense Gilberto C. Teodoro Jr., after which General Romeo S. Brawner Jr. PA, Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of the Philippines, administered the Oath of Office to the new officers.
Cavalier Ricardo A. David Jr., Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the PMA Alumni Association, Inc., separately led the graduates in the Oath of PMA Alumni Association membership, formally welcoming the Class of 2026 into the wider community of PMA graduates who have served and continue to serve the Filipino nation.
The involvement of the country’s top defense and military officials in the proceedings reflected the national importance that the Philippine government attaches to the annual commissioning exercise as the primary source of the AFP’s commissioned officer corps.
Academy Reaffirms Commitment to Character and Competence
In an official statement authorized by LCDR Jesse Nestor B. Saludo PN, Chief of the Public Affairs Office of the Philippine Military Academy, the institution reaffirmed its core mandate in the wake of the Class of 2026’s graduation.
The PMA stated that “through the graduation of PMA ‘TALANG DANGAL’ Class of 2026, the Academy reaffirms its commitment to producing officers of character, competence, and honor who are prepared to lead and serve in an increasingly complex and evolving security environment,” according to its official release.
The Philippine Military Academy, situated at Fort General Gregorio H. Del Pilar in Baguio City, is the AFP’s premier military education institution and has been producing commissioned officers for all branches of the armed forces since its founding. It operates under the command structure of the Armed Forces of the Philippines.
With 207 fresh officers entering service, the AFP receives a new cohort of trained professionals at a moment of heightened attention to regional security dynamics and an accelerating push to incorporate advanced technology into military operations. The May 16 ceremony was attended by graduates’ families, senior civilian and military officials, and members of the wider PMA alumni community, according to the Academy’s public affairs office.
