Born into a family steeped in military aviation, a young cadet from Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu has accomplished what few Filipino officer candidates ever do — completing a full four-year degree program at the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado, returning home decorated with honors and ready to serve the Philippine Air Force.
Philippine Military Academy Cadet First Class Dans Uriel Bacalso Ferrer, 23, formally graduated from USAFA on May 28, 2026. Originally enrolled under the PMA “SIKLAB-LAYA” Class of 2025, Cadet Ferrer participated in the academy’s Foreign Pre-Commission Training Institution (FPCTI) program — a bilateral arrangement that sends elite Filipino cadets to partner military academies in the United States for full officer education before commissioning into the Armed Forces of the Philippines. The PMA Public Affairs Office confirmed the graduation in an official statement authenticated by Lieutenant Commander Jesse Nestor B. Saludo PN, Chief of the PMA Public Affairs Office.
A Degree Built on Academic and Military Excellence
Over the course of four years at USAFA, Cadet Ferrer earned a Bachelor of Science degree with a major in Foreign Area Studies under the Military Strategic Studies track. His regional concentration focused on Asia, and he completed a minor in the Japanese language — a combination that equips him with both analytical and linguistic tools relevant to regional security affairs.
His academic performance placed him on the Dean’s List, one of the most prestigious scholastic recognitions at the Colorado-based academy. But Ferrer’s achievements extended well beyond the classroom.
Among the military certifications and qualifications he accumulated during his time in the United States, according to PMA Public Affairs Office records, were the German Armed Forces Proficiency Badge (Gold), Expert qualification for the M4 rifle (5.56mm), Expert qualification for the M18 pistol (9mm), the Cadet Cyberwarfare Badge, and Cadet Glider Wings with a star — the last of which was awarded upon his solo completion of a flight in the TG-16 aircraft.
Ferrer also completed five solo freefall skydives, earning him Parachutist Wings and demonstrating airborne proficiency that will directly support his future service with the Philippine Air Force.
Top Passer in 2020 PMA Entrance Exam
Ferrer’s exceptional performance at USAFA was foreshadowed by his results even before he entered any military academy. In 2020, he ranked first overall in the PMA Entrance Examination — a highly competitive national test taken annually by thousands of aspiring officer candidates across the Philippines. His top ranking made him one of the most distinguished candidates of his generation and flagged him early as a candidate for international training programs.
Through PMA’s FPCTI framework, highly qualified cadets are identified for placement at partner academies in the United States, where they complete full degree programs before returning to be commissioned. Ferrer’s selection reflected both his academic standing and the Philippine military’s strategic goal of developing officers with international education, specialized knowledge, and cross-cultural experience, the PMA Public Affairs Office noted in its release.
Aviation Is in His Blood — and His Upbringing
For Ferrer, a career in military aviation was never a distant aspiration — it was the environment he was raised in. He grew up at Brigadier General Benito Ebuen Air Base in Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu, the son of Lieutenant Colonel Demetrio DL Ferrer PAF (Ret), a retired Philippine Air Force pilot and member of the PMA “MASINAG” Class of 1998. His mother, Ms. Nancy Bacalso-Ferrer, is a former broadcast journalist with ABS-CBN Central Visayas.
Surrounded by aircraft from childhood and shaped by his father’s example as a military aviator, Ferrer credited his upbringing on the air base and his father’s career as the driving forces behind his own pursuit of aviation. “His father inspired him to pursue this path,” the PMA Public Affairs Office stated in its official release. Ferrer has also acknowledged that his family remains his most enduring source of motivation throughout his demanding years of training across two military academies.
Next Stop: PAF Commission and Pilot Training
With his USAFA graduation now complete, Cadet Ferrer is scheduled to be commissioned as an officer in the Philippine Air Force. His first assignment will be the Basic Aviation Officer Course (BAFOC), the standard entry-level aviation training pathway for newly commissioned PAF officers.
Following BAFOC, Ferrer has expressed his intention to enter formal pilot training, bringing to fruition the ambition that has shaped his entire journey through two rigorous military academies on opposite sides of the Pacific. His background in Foreign Area Studies, with its Asia-focused strategic studies track and Japanese language minor, also positions him as a potentially valuable resource in regional security analysis and bilateral military cooperation efforts, according to PMA.
The combination of an internationally recognized USAFA degree, multiple advanced military qualifications, language capability, and a family legacy in aviation makes Ferrer a distinctively prepared officer for the evolving operational demands of the Philippine Air Force.
A Message of Hope for Young Filipinos
After his graduation, Ferrer shared a message directed at young Filipinos — whether they aspire to military service or any demanding life goal. In remarks referenced by the PMA Public Affairs Office, he said:
“To the Filipino people, never stop dreaming. Hangga’t nagsusumikap tayo para sa ating mga pangarap, patuloy na uunlad ang ating bansa.”
(“To the Filipino people, never stop dreaming. As long as we strive for our dreams, our nation will continue to progress.”)
He also expressed gratitude to his immediate family, his American sponsor families who supported him during his years in Colorado, his classmates, friends, and the broader PMA community whose encouragement sustained him through years of training far from home.
What PMA’s International Program Means for the AFP
Cadet Ferrer’s achievement is part of a deliberate institutional strategy. The FPCTI program, under which he completed his education, is a structured bilateral arrangement between the Philippine Military Academy and the United States Air Force Academy that allows select Filipino cadets to earn their full officer education at allied academies abroad before returning for commissioning into the AFP.
According to the PMA Public Affairs Office, Ferrer’s accomplishment “underscores PMA’s broader effort to develop future officers through international exposure, advanced military education, and cross-cultural learning.” The academy described his success as a demonstration of its institutional commitment to “preparing young leaders who can bring home valuable knowledge, skills, and perspectives in service of the Armed Forces of the Philippines.”
The FPCTI program sits within a larger network of international military education partnerships maintained by the AFP and PMA, designed to deepen interoperability with allied nations and widen the strategic perspective of the AFP’s officer corps. Ferrer’s “SIKLAB-LAYA” Class of 2025 designation reflects his original PMA batch, with the extended USAFA program placing his actual graduation in 2026.
As one of the Philippines’ most credentialed young military officers, Ferrer now begins the next chapter — serving the country whose skies he has spent years training to defend.
