A Philippine Army reservist has brought honor to the country by finishing 11th out of 76 elite drone pilots in an international military competition held in Sydney, Australia on March 14, 2026. Private First Class Rex Froilan Gil, competing under the codename “RezFVP,” participated in the Military International Drone Racing Tournament (MIDRT AS 26), showcasing the growing capabilities of Filipino military personnel in advanced drone operations.

According to Colonel Louie G. Dema-ala, Chief Public Affairs of the Philippine Army, Gil’s performance demonstrated the organization’s commitment to keeping pace with rapidly evolving drone warfare technology. The competition tested participants’ skills in high-speed First-Person View (FPV) drone events, including piloting agility, precision targeting, and tactical maneuvering.

Building on Previous Success

Gil’s achievement builds upon the Philippine Army drone team’s previous success in international competitions. The team secured a 5th place finish in the 2025 Military International Drone Racing Tournament held at the prestigious Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in the United Kingdom.

The five-member Philippine Army contingent that competed in Sydney consisted of one officer, two enlisted personnel, and two reservists. Their participation was part of the Australian Army’s 125th founding anniversary celebration, highlighting the strengthening military ties between the Philippines and Australia.

The tournament represented a significant opportunity for the Philippine military to benchmark its drone capabilities against other nations’ forces. With 76 elite pilots from various countries competing, Gil’s 11th place finish places him among the world’s top military drone operators.

Growing Importance of Drone Technology

The Philippine Army’s investment in drone technology reflects the increasing importance of unmanned aerial systems in modern military operations. Traditional intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) missions have expanded to include more complex tactical applications requiring advanced piloting skills.

Colonel Dema-ala emphasized that the Army continues to capacitate both regular forces and reserve units to meet the demands of the fast-changing global security landscape. This strategic approach ensures that the Philippine military remains competitive in an era where drone technology plays an increasingly critical role in national defense.

The competition format, featuring high-speed FPV drone racing, mirrors real-world military applications where split-second decision-making and precise control are essential. Pilots must demonstrate exceptional hand-eye coordination, spatial awareness, and tactical thinking under pressure.

Regional Security Implications

For Negros Oriental and the broader Visayas region, the advancement of Philippine military drone capabilities has significant security implications. The province, which has faced security challenges including insurgency and natural disasters, could benefit from enhanced military surveillance and response capabilities.

The development of skilled drone operators within the Philippine Army’s ranks strengthens the military’s ability to conduct effective operations across the archipelago’s challenging terrain. Islands like Negros Oriental, with their mountainous interiors and extensive coastlines, present unique operational challenges that drone technology can help address.

The integration of reservists like Gil into advanced military operations also demonstrates the Army’s commitment to leveraging civilian expertise. Many reservists bring technical skills from their civilian careers that enhance military capabilities when properly trained and deployed.

International Military Cooperation

The Philippine team’s participation in the Australian Army’s anniversary celebration reflects growing defense cooperation between the two nations. Australia has been a key partner in regional security initiatives, and military exchanges like these strengthen operational interoperability between allied forces.

The invitation to compete alongside elite military units from around the world demonstrates international recognition of the Philippine Army’s growing capabilities in unmanned systems operations. This recognition could lead to additional training opportunities and technology sharing agreements.

Military drone racing tournaments serve multiple purposes beyond competition. They provide opportunities for knowledge exchange, technology demonstration, and the development of international military relationships that prove valuable during joint operations or humanitarian missions.

Future Developments

The Philippine Army’s success in international drone competitions positions the organization well for future technological developments in unmanned systems. As drone technology continues to evolve, the experience gained through international competition provides valuable insights for operational planning and training programs.

The Army’s hashtag campaign “#AngInyongMatatagngHukbongKatihan #StrongerArmyStrongerCountry #ServingthePeopleSecuringtheLand” reflects institutional pride in these achievements and commitment to continued excellence in military capabilities.

For the Philippines, developing world-class drone operators represents a strategic investment in national security capabilities that can address both traditional military threats and emerging challenges such as disaster response, maritime security, and counter-terrorism operations.

Gil’s achievement serves as an inspiration for other military personnel and demonstrates that with proper training and dedication, Filipino servicemen can compete at the highest levels of international military competition.
