The Negros Oriental Police Provincial Office (NOrPPO) reported that Holy Week 2026 observance across the province concluded peacefully with no major incidents directly related to the religious celebration, according to an official statement released Monday.
Police Colonel Timmar J. Alam, Officer-in-Charge Provincial Director of NOrPPO, credited the successful security operation to increased police deployment, strategic checkpoint establishments, and activation of assistance hubs throughout the province during the solemn religious period from March 29 to April 5, 2026.
“Unity is the foundation of a peaceful society. The successful observance of Holy Week 2026 highlights the power of cooperation. Every effort contributed to the safety of our province,” Alam stated in the official report.

Enhanced Security Measures Prevent Criminal Activities
The provincial police implemented comprehensive security measures that significantly contributed to crime prevention during the Holy Week period. Increased police visibility through strategic deployments ensured prompt response capabilities in key areas across Negros Oriental.
Authorities established multiple checkpoints and activated assistance hubs at strategic locations to monitor movement and provide immediate support to residents and visitors. These proactive measures created a visible police presence that deterred potential criminal activities throughout the province.
The coordinated security effort involved personnel from NOrPPO Headquarters, Dumaguete City Police Station led by Police Lieutenant Colonel Don Richmon T. Conag, and Sibulan Municipal Police Station under Police Major Fortunato S. Villafuerte, among other municipal police units.
Religious Observance Contributes to Peaceful Atmosphere
The solemn nature of Holy Week played a vital role in maintaining peace and order across the province. Public focus on prayer, reflection, and family activities, combined with temporary closure of many commercial establishments and reduced nightlife, helped minimize opportunities for crimes such as theft and robbery.
Streets remained noticeably quieter throughout the observance period, particularly during Maundy Thursday on April 3 and Good Friday on April 4, 2026. The reduced commercial activity and limited public gatherings created an environment less conducive to criminal incidents.
NOrPPO emphasized that no Holy Week-related incidents were recorded within their area of responsibility throughout the entire observance period, marking a successful security operation for the province.
Minimal Traffic Incidents Despite Holiday Travel
While vehicular accidents occurred during the Holy Week period, authorities attributed these primarily to reckless driving rather than increased traffic volume. Overall traffic remained low throughout the province, resulting in only minimal accident cases compared to regular periods.
The reduced traffic volume reflected the traditional Holy Week pattern where many residents remain in their localities for religious observances rather than engaging in extensive travel. This contributed to the overall peaceful atmosphere maintained across Negros Oriental during the religious holiday.
Police monitoring of major highways and provincial roads ensured quick response to the few traffic incidents that occurred, preventing escalation into more serious situations.
Multi-Agency Coordination Ensures Effective Response
NOrPPO acknowledged the crucial support provided by various partner agencies that contributed to the successful Holy Week security operation. The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) assisted with road monitoring and maintenance issues that could affect public safety.
Local Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Offices (LDRRMO) across different municipalities and cities in Negros Oriental provided coordination for emergency response capabilities. Traffic Management Offices (TMO) from various local government units collaborated in maintaining smooth traffic flow and addressing vehicular incidents.
Other law enforcement units complemented the police operation, ensuring comprehensive coverage of security concerns throughout the province. This multi-agency approach enabled immediate response capabilities and effective coordination during the religious observance period.
Easter Sunday Mass Strengthens Police-Community Relations
Following the peaceful Holy Week observance, NOrPPO personnel participated in Easter Sunday Mass on April 5, 2026, at 9:00 AM at the NOrPPO Chapel located at Camp Lt. Col. Francisco C. Fernandez Jr., Barangay Agan-an, Sibulan, Negros Oriental.
Reverend Father Isidro H. Vinzon presided over the Holy Mass, which served as a meaningful gathering for prayer, reflection, and thanksgiving. Police Major Elpedio R. Tago-an Jr., Acting Chief of the Provincial Community Affairs Development Unit, joined other NOrPPO personnel and local residents in the celebration.
The Easter Sunday celebration emphasized themes of renewal, hope, and triumph of faith while highlighting the importance of discipline, unity, and commitment in public service. The religious activity reinforced values of integrity and dedication among police personnel while strengthening collaboration between law enforcement and community members.
Continued Commitment to Public Safety
Provincial police authorities assured the public of their continued commitment to upholding safety, security, and quality public service, especially during significant national and religious events. The successful Holy Week 2026 operation demonstrates the effectiveness of coordinated security measures and community cooperation.
The peaceful observance of Holy Week 2026 in Negros Oriental reflects both effective law enforcement strategies and the positive impact of religious observance on community behavior. Police officials indicated that lessons learned from this operation would inform future security planning for major religious and national celebrations.
NOrPPO operates under the Philippine National Police’s banner of “Bagong PNP para sa Bagong Pilipinas: Serbisyong Mabilis, Tapat at Nararamdaman” (New PNP for the New Philippines: Fast, Honest, and Responsive Service), maintaining their commitment to community-oriented policing and public safety.
