TACLOBAN CITY, Leyte – The Armed Forces of the Philippines launched a community-based mural painting initiative on March 29, 2026, bringing together military units, youth organizations, and local government agencies in a unified artistic expression of patriotism and peace.
Task Group Tacloban, in partnership with youth organization Amare Et Caritas, launched “Pintahang Pagkakaisa: Community Mural Painting” at Barangay 43-B along Congressman Mate Avenue in Tacloban City, according to an official AFP statement released Tuesday.
The initiative, guided by the theme “Lupa ng Araw, Bayang Di Pasisiil,” gathered government forces, local agencies, youth groups, and civil society organizations to create a visual representation of shared values including patriotism, resilience, and collective responsibility.

Military Units and Civilian Partners Unite
Multiple agencies participated in the community mural project, demonstrating broad institutional support for peace-building initiatives in Eastern Visayas. The 8th Civil-Military Operations Battalion led military participation alongside the Tactical Operations Group 8 and Naval Reserve Center Eastern Visayas.
Law enforcement agencies joined the effort through the Tacloban City Police Office and Philippine Coast Guard District Eastern Visayas. The City Government of Tacloban participated through its City Tourism Office, while youth representation came from Sangguniang Kabataan Tacloban.
Civil society organizations including Eagles Club Eastern Visayas, PITAD, and other civic partners contributed to the collaborative effort, according to organizers.
Youth Leader Emphasizes Cultural Heritage
Jon Ivan Torreras, President of Amare Et Caritas, connected the mural initiative to pre-colonial Filipino artistic traditions, emphasizing the deep cultural significance of visual expression in Philippine society.
“Art is in the blood of Filipinos—even before the arrival of colonizers, our ancestors were known as pintados. This is our way of continuing that legacy, using art to express who we are and what we stand for,” Torreras said in a statement.
The youth leader’s reference to “pintados” highlights the historical tradition of body art and visual expression among indigenous Filipino communities, particularly in the Visayas region where Tacloban is located.
Army Commander Cites Community Trust
Colonel Rico Amaro, Assistant Division Commander for Operations of the 8th Infantry Division, praised the collaborative nature of the project as evidence of strengthening civil-military relations in the region.
“What we are seeing here is a powerful expression of unity—youth groups and civic organizations coming together to transform an empty wall into something meaningful. It reflects a shared desire to contribute, to serve, and to build something positive for the community,” Amaro stated.
The colonel’s remarks underscore the military’s efforts to engage civilian communities through non-combat initiatives, building trust and cooperation through shared cultural activities.
Initiative Precedes Araw ng Kagitingan Observance
Organizers positioned the mural painting as Phase 1 of a sustained series of community engagements leading to the observance of Araw ng Kagitingan on April 9, 2026. The national holiday commemorates the bravery of Filipino and American soldiers during World War II.
The timing connects the contemporary peace-building initiative with historical memory of Filipino resistance and heroism, reinforcing themes of national resilience and unity in the face of challenges.
