DUMAGUETE CITY, NEGROS ORIENTAL — As Holy Week approaches, Maayo Shipping, Inc. has announced significant adjustments to its ferry schedules for routes between Negros Oriental and Siquijor. These changes, effective from March 30 to April 4, 2026, are designed to accommodate the increased number of travelers during this period, a time when many Filipinos return to their home provinces or travel for religious observances.

Key Schedule Changes for Ferry Trips

According to the official advisory released by Maayo Shipping, regular ferry services will operate without interruption until Thursday, April 2. However, crucial adjustments will take place over the peak travel days of Good Friday (April 3) and Black Saturday (April 4).

On the busy Tampi–Bato route, services will continue with a limited schedule during the Holy Week’s climax. Planned departures on April 3 and 4 will include trips at 4:00 AM, 8:00 AM, 10:30 AM, 1:30 PM, 4:30 PM, 7:30 PM, and 10:30 PM in both directions. This is a reduction in frequency; therefore, travelers are advised to secure their tickets in advance as demand is expected to be high.

In stark contrast, the Sibulan–Liloan and Liloan–Larena routes will halt operations entirely on Good Friday and Black Saturday, marking a complete suspension of services during this time. Travelers planning to use these routes should make arrangements accordingly, as no vessels will operate on these dates.

Post-Holy Week Resumption of Services

Normal ferry operations are expected to resume on Easter Sunday, April 5, 2026. Travelers can look forward to early morning trips starting with a 7:00 AM ferry from Liloan to Larena, followed by a 4:00 PM service from Larena to Bato, allowing pilgrims and holidaymakers to return home after the observance.

Maayo Shipping has requested all passengers to remain observant of the updated schedules to reduce the likelihood of confusion and delays during the busy travel period.

Increased Passenger Volume Expected

This adjustment comes as part of a broader recognition of the annual travel surge during Holy Week, a period characterized by a significant increase in the number of commuters and tourists alike. Given that many families travel together, port congestion is anticipated, and travelers are encouraged to allow extra time for check-in, boarding, and travel.

Authorities have also urged arriving passengers to conduct final confirmations of their journey plans, including schedules and ticketing, to minimize any last-minute inconveniences. A proactive approach in planning and timing is advised, especially for those with connecting land trips once they disembark.

Safety Guidelines for Passengers

In light of the expected surge in ferry travel, Maayo Shipping management has reiterated the importance of following safety protocols. Health measures, including the wearing of face masks in crowded areas and adherence to social distancing protocols when necessary, continue to be encouraged. Passengers are reminded to carry hand sanitizers and remain vigilant during their travels.

Passengers should expect enhanced safety checks at the ports, as authorities work to ensure the smooth flow of travel as well as the safety of all individuals utilizing ferry services during the Holy Week.

Community and Economic Impacts

The changes in ferry schedules are likely to have far-reaching impacts on the tourism and local economy in both Negros Oriental and Siquijor. With Holy Week being one of the busiest seasons for tourism in the region, local businesses, accommodation providers, and food establishments can expect a spike in visitor numbers.

Local officials emphasize the importance of ensuring that both residents and tourists have access to reliable transit options during this time, making adjustments and preparations to accommodate increased demand. The movement of tourists to and from local attractions will contribute significantly to the area’s economic activity during the Holy Week.

Conclusion and Recommendations for Travelers

As Holy Week draws near, travelers in Negros Oriental need to finalize their travel itineraries early. Keeping abreast of the ferry schedule advisories from Maayo Shipping will be essential for ensuring a smooth travel experience. The local government continues to support these adjustments to enhance service predictability for passengers and reduce potential disruptions.

Travelers are encouraged to stay updated through official statements and social media platforms associated with Maayo Shipping, which will provide real-time updates on any further changes to ferry schedules or services. With thoughtful planning and adherence to safety guidelines, families and holidaymakers can expect safe and meaningful journeys during this spiritually significant time.
